Minister of Public Works and Governor of Phnom Penh Inspect 60-Meter Road to Address Traffic Accidents

Phnom Penh: Peng Purna, Minister of Public Works and Transport and Governor of the Phnom Penh Municipal Government, led a team of experts and local authorities on January 12, 2025, to inspect the condition of the 60-meter road, known as Samdech Techo Hun Sen Road, with the goal of finding ways to reduce traffic accidents.

Following the inspection, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration reached several agreements to enhance road safety. These measures include increasing police presence and enforcing stricter fines for drivers who violate traffic laws or exceed speed limits on the road, which spans the Meanchey and Dangkor districts.

Sam Piseth, Director of the Department of Public Works and Transport for Phnom Penh, noted in a statement that the Minister and the Governor acknowledged several key actions. "We need to ensure that the police force effectively monitors compliance with traffic laws and penalizes speeding drivers. It is essential that law enforcement conducts its duties with greater responsibility and diligence," he emphasized.

To further enhance safety, new traffic signs and traffic lights will be installed, along with additional reflectors to improve visibility and reduce accidents for both daytime and nighttime travel.

Piseth also outlined specific speed limits for the area: drivers traveling from the Mercedes stoplight to the “Morodok Techo” flyover will be restricted to 40 kilometers per hour, while the limit will be 60 kilometers per hour from National Road No. 2 to the Mercedes stoplight.

As part of the initiative, safety helmets were distributed to residents who correctly answered questions about traffic laws. Authorities urged all citizens to adhere to traffic regulations, particularly emphasizing the importance of wearing safety helmets to prevent accidents. Recent days have seen an increase in traffic incidents along the 60-meter road, highlighting the need for these safety measures.
